ToBay offers brochure on catch basins

The Town of Oyster Bay has available for residents a brochure entitled Everything You Wanted to Know About Catch Basins (and Sumps), according to Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone.

"On streets throughout the Town of Oyster Bay, you can watch rainwater travel along the curb until it disappears into an opening called a catch basin," Councilman Macagnone stated. "These 'mini-reservoirs' also provide a way to rejuvenate, or recharge, the underground drinking water system, so it is critical that they be kept clean and free or debris."

Councilman Macagnone went on to say that while the Town's Department of Public Works Highway Division has an ongoing catch basin cleaning program, residents can help by not throwing debris or used motor oil into them and by clearing away leaves, snow and debris that may accumulate on the grills. "Clearing the grills is especially important before a snowstorm or heavy rain because the catch basins are where the snowmelt and rainwater go. If the drains are clogged, the backed up water can cause street flooding."

Any resident or organization interested in obtaining a free brochure can pick up one at the Town Halls North (Oyster Bay) and South (Massapequa) and at the Department of Public Works (Syosset); write to the Town of Oyster Bay Public Information Office, 54 Audrey Ave., Oyster Bay, N.Y. 11771 or call 624-6380.
