MPK Village is right to demand compliance by property owners Last week, we wrote in this space about Oyster Bay Town's decision to move against two property owners whose buildings were unsafe and in violation of building codes and ordinances. We recognized the difficulties public officials face when they have to take decisive action against property owners in the the greater interest of public safety. Again this week, a situation arises, this time in Massapequa Park Village. And, again, public officials are taking decisive action. The building in question is at 1010 Park Boulevard and it has come to the attention of the Village that the property is being used, in part, for single room residential occupancy. While the owner is permitted to have two residential units there, the site has been broken down for more, is cramped, without adequate ventilation and unsafe, say officials. As a result, Mayor James Altadonna says, and we agree, that the Village has no alternative but to demand compliance. For almost two years, it has attempted to do that through negotiations, which continue. We commend the Village for taking this responsible but difficult road. Without that kind of commitment throughout the Village, the future would be left to those who arbitrarily make their own rules at the expense of their neighbors. Massapequa Park Village should not back down.
