Constance Cantwell: Founding member of the Massapequa Public Library
Born December 13, 1909 in Warsaw, New York to Michael Leo and Emma (Lee) Coleman, she later earned a degree at Trinity College in Washington D.C. and a master's degree at Geneseo State University in New York State. She lived on Hollywood Avenue in Massapequa for 60 years. Mrs. Cantwell, who was active with the Citizens Committee of the Library, which helped to establish the first library here. She was assistant director librarian and the head of reference and adult services at the Massapequa Public Library from its inception in 1953 to her retirement in 1976. Prior to that, she volunteered at the Massapequa Library's first storefront on Broadway, taught English and was the librarian at Attica High School in Attica, New York. She was also on staff at the Washington D.C. Public Library. According to her daughter Mary, she was a "brilliant person" who was a public speaker at many functions and an avid reader who enjoyed crossword puzzles. Mrs. Cantwell was a 60-year member of the St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church in Amityville and a member of the American Association of University Women. She leaves behind her children: Mary Fullam of Copiague and Dr. Brian Joseph Cantwell of Palo Alto, California; her five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; as well as other loved ones and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Joseph J. Rev, Father Richard Stelter, pastor of St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church, conducted a prayer service at the Powell Funeral Home Inc., Amityville, on February 19, 2007. A Mass of Christian Burial was said at St. Martin's, assisted by the Consolation Ministry and members of the family. Interment followed in Trinity Cemetery, Amityville.
