School bus fire in Massapequa
No students on bus, blaze extinguished quickly
by Tiffany Elliott

A fire on a school bus last week was quickly extinguished but held up traffic for some time.
Traffic was stopped in its tracks by the scene of smoke billowing from a school bus at Unqua and Merrick Roads the afternoon of February 27th. After scrambling onlookers determined no children were on board, they cleared the driver of his vehicle and waited for the fire department.

At 2:15 p.m. a fire that began behind the wheels of a school bus, bound to pickup students at Massapequa High School, quickly engulfed the engine. A witness, who was visiting her grandmother at the Parkview Nursing Home next door at the time of the incident said she was thankful to learn that no children were on board.

"My son travels along that route at the same time on the same day coming back from a school program. I thought for a moment that he was on that bus," said the shaken onlooker who asked that her name not be used.

The intersection of Unqua and Merrick was blocked off by police cars for quite some time, according to Massapequa Fire Chief Thomas Kennelly who said the fire, which most likely started in the vehichle's brake system, was handled quickly.

"Two Massapequa Fire department trucks responded and extinguished the fire. We were just glad that no kids on the bus and that no one was hurt," he said.
