Massapequa Hall of Fame responds to concerns raised by letter last week Dear Editor: The Massapequa School District Board of Education and administration consider the issue of student privacy to be a very serious matter and are vigilant in their efforts to ensure that students' rights in this area are never compromised. In last week's edition of the Massapequa Post, some concerns were raised regarding privacy and an initiative in which we are currently taking part. We would like to allay these concerns at this time. Recently the school district, in partnership with the Massapequa Hall of Fame Committee, entered into a contractual agreement with Harris Connect, Inc. to create a Massapequa High School/Alfred G. Berner High School Alumni Directory. Harris Connect, Inc. founded in 1963, is a leading publisher of alumni directories for colleges, universities, and high schools around the country, including the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, and St. John's University School of Law. The purpose of the directory is to celebrate alumni achievements and provide former students with the ability to reconnect with classmates and friends. Participation in the directories is on a purely voluntary basis, and alumni have the right to refuse to provide information. Further, our contract with Harris Connect stipulates that directories will only be distributed to alumni of Massapequa and Berner High Schools and their families, and the information gathered will only be used for this purpose and returned to the district. The voluntary nature of the data collection process and the confidentiality provisions contained in the contract are designed to protect the identity and privacy rights of the alumni contacted for the purpose of inclusion in the directories. In short, information will only be used for the purpose noted above and will not be marketed or sold to thirdparty interests. We strongly encourage alumni to call the numbers on the notifications they received should they have further questions or concerns. The Massapequa School District is committed to protecting the rights of its students and alumni and at no time engages in any activity that will jeopardize or compromise that responsibility.
