ToBay to offer free Tai Chi classes to seniors The Town of Oyster Bay's Department of Community and Youth Services is offering free Tai Chi classes to Town seniors age 60 and older at its senior centers. According to Town Councilman Angelo A. Delligatti, participants do not have to be members of a Town Senior Club, but they must be residents of the Town of Oyster Bay. "Tai Chi, sometimes described as meditation in motion, is a Chinese martial art that is primarily practiced for its health benefits, including a means for dealing with tension and stress," Councilman Delligatti said. "Health benefits include stress reduction, greater balance and increased flexibility, especially for older adults. Tai Chi is a non-competitive, self paced system of gentle exercise, performed in a defined series of postures or movements in a slow, graceful manner." The Councilman noted that Tai Chi classes scheduled for the month of March are as follows: + Tuesday, March 13 and 27, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Syosset Senior Housing, 40 Eastwoods Road and Muttontown Road, Syosset + Tuesday, March 13 and 27, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Shepherd Hill Housing, 115 Central Park Road, Plainview + Wednesday, March 7 and 21, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Senior Housing, 125 West Main Street, Oyster Bay + Wednesday, March 14 and 28, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Massapequa Senior Housing - Pine Grove, 530 Clocks Boulevard, Massapequa + Friday, March 2 and 16, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Hicksville Senior Housing, 355 Newbridge Road, Hicksville + Friday, March 9, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Bethpage Senior Housing, 7 Burkhardt Avenue, Bethpage + Friday, March 23 and 30, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., North Massapequa Senior Center, 214 North Albany Avenue, North Massapequa "Tai Chi has proven an ideal form of exercise for seniors because the movements are low impact and put minimal stress on muscles and joints," Councilman Delligatti said. "For the same reasons, if you have a condition such as arthritis or you're recovering from an injury, you may find it beneficial."
