St. David's in MPK welcomes Reverend David Meyers

David John Meyers was born on December 2, 1948 in Cleveland, Ohio, to Beatrice and the late John Meyers and was educated in the public schools of Bedford, Ohio; Glen Ellyn, Illinois and Racine, Wisconsin. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, with a major in German and minors in sociology and Greek. It was there that he met the love of his life, JoAnn Wenzel and they were married on August 30, 1970. Meyers received a master's of divinity degree from Christ Seminary-Seminex, St. Louis, Missouri in 1974 and has done graduate studies at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, Illinois.

Pastor Meyers was ordained and installed as Pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Richmond Hill, Queens on November 3, 1974, where he celebrated and preached in German and English. After serving seven years there, he was called to be Senior Pastor of Trinity Lutheran church in Long Island City (Astoria) where he served from 1981 to 1983, when he was called to Trinity Lutheran Church and School of Bogota (Bergen County), New Jersey, where he served from 1994 to September, 2006, when he came to Massapequa Park to become Pastor of St. David's Evangelical Lutheran Church on Clark Boulevard.

Pastor Meyers' church activities include serving as conference dean, as delegate to the National Church Assembly that led to the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in American and teaching New Testament and Introduction to the Bible for Diakonia - a program for the training of deacons in New York and New Jersey.

Pastors Meyers' community activities range from volunteer counselor at a satellite clinic of Creedmoor Hospital, to Emergency Medical Technician with volunteer ambulance corps, to board member at Wartburg Lutheran Home in Brooklyn, the Lutheran Center for the Aging in Smithtown, North Brooklyn Mobile Meals, to volunteer chaplaincy at Goldwater and Coler Hospitals on Riker's Island, various nursing homes and a past member of the Astoria Kiwanis Club. Pastor Meyers come to St. David's with a great love for Christian education, having served throughout his ministry in congregation with Lutheran schools and preschools.

Music is a huge part of the lives of Pastor Meyers and JoAnn, his wife of 36 years. They met when they were both in a chorus group at Valparaiso University and continue to sing with the St. Cecilia Chorus of New York, performing major choral works with an orchestra in Carnegie Hall. He also plays guitar, dabbles in bluegrass banjo and occasionally takes out his trombone for special gigs. Other leisure time activities include hiking, cycling, woodworking and automobile mechanics and recently writing, having collaborated on an illustrated synopsis and reading guide to other Gospels, The Illustrated Life of Jesus, with Hylas Publishing, in Irvington, New York.

Pastor Meyers was officially installed by The Rev. Laurie B. Cline, dean of the Eastern Nassau Conference, Metro-NY Synod on January 7. Preaching was by The Rev. Gary L. Mehl, Interim Pastor, St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Woodhaven, Queens.
