Correction

A front page story in last week's edition, "Budget restraints threaten school athletics in Plainedge," requires some clarification.

The $69.23 figure used to express the amount of education in the district represents the cost per thousand dollars of residential income paid in taxes, not the school's tax rate. The income figure is based on various statistics, including census data, and shows that approximately half of the residents in the school district earn $80,000 a year or less.

In addition, the article did not clearly define developmental sports, which is not interchangeable with intramural sports. Instead, developmental sports is a concept that sets athletic goals as well as educational and social goals for students, and is the subject of discussion among educators throughout the country. While developmental sports was discussed by the Plainedge board for several weeks, as the article stated, it was voted down at a school board meeting this week.
