Michael Fitzgibbon, 90, business owner, veteran and active Massapequan

Massapequa resident Michael "Mike" Francis Fitzgibbon, a member of many local clubs and a local businessman, died peacefully December 16, 2006 in his Roxbury Lane home surrounded by loved ones. He was 90 years old and was affectionately referred to as "Pa" and "Mac" by those who loved him.

He was deeply involved with his community and was a member of the Massapequa Lion's Club for more than 45 years, as well as a member of the Elks Club, AmVets Club, the American Legion, Marine Corps League and the Hibernians. He also loved classic cars.

"There were so many people at his funeral that showed how much he was loved and admired," said his stepdaughter, Donna who said the loving family-man lived on Roxbury Lane for 35 years.

Born October 15, 1916 in West New York, New Jersey he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later worked as an oil burner mechanic for Massapequa Fuel Oil then his own company M&F Oil Burner for many years. He also drove Mac trucks cross country and did heating and plumbing work.

He was a strong man who overcame many obstacles while keeping his sense of humor and caring mind-set. According to his stepdaughter, he grew up in an orphanage, was on his own by age 13 and traveled on his own all over the country.

Mr. Fitzgibbon leaves behind his children:

Hank and Michele; his grandchildren: Michael and Thomas; his stepchildren: Donna Fowler, Laura Twombley and James Platt; many other grandchildren and great grandchildren; as well as other loved ones and many friends. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marie and his second wife, Mary.

He reposed at the James Romanelli Funeral Home in Massapequa on December 19, 2006. A Funeral Mass was held at Maria Regina R.C. Church, Seaford, on December 20, 2006 followed by interment with Military Honors in Calverton National Cemetery.
