by Tiffany Elliott

Longtime Farmingdale educator Frederick Rudolph Wilkens died March 3, 2007 at the Riverside Convalescent Center in Smithfield, Virginia. He was 79-years old and served the school district as both an educator and administrator.

Born July 4, 1927 in Queens, New York, he lived in Farmingdale from the age of three. After receiving his bachelors and masters of arts degrees in education from Columbia Teacher College, he worked for the Farmingdale School District for 36 years.

In addition to being a social studies teacher and the chairman of the social studies department, he was also the assistant principal of the Weldon E. Howitt Junior High School for many years before retiring in 1992. He will also be remembered for his many years as a local Little League coach and umpire.

Mr. Wilkens' love of history led to a lifelong hobby of collecting Civil War memorabilia and he was a member of many historical associations. He devoted much of his time to the L.I. Antique Historical Arms Association serving as both secretary and president for many years. A sponsor of the updated book "Farmingdale's Story: Farms to Flights," he also penned his own articles for various historical publications.

He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Ethel; his children: John and his wife Kathleen of Westin, Florida and Christine Amos and her husband Jim of Smithfield, Virginia; his grandchildren: Michael, Laurie, Katie, Taylor and Morgan; as well as other loved ones and friends.

Mr. Wilkens reposed at the Arthur F. White Funeral Home, Farmingdale, on March 6 and 7, 2007. A Funeral Mass was said March 9, 2007 followed by interment in Pinelawn Memorial Park.

Donations in Mr. Wilkens' name can be sent to The American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, Texas 75231.
