Plainedge athletes honor teachers and students

Plainedge High School Seniors Joseph DeLutri and Gina DeTillio received recognition at The Nassau Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance's Outstanding PE Student Awards Dinner on December 11 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

Physical Education teachers Kristi Dillon and Anthony Giovanelli accompanied the two students, who met the following criteria for achievement: exceptional physical performance, academic achievement, leadership qualities, and outstanding school/community service.

DeLutri is a three-season varsity athlete, participating on the basketball, and baseball teams, and serving as captain to the football team. He also volunteers his time with the Special Olympics, and mentors young athletes at summer basketball camps and baseball clinics. DeLutri is also involved in peer leadership for the Athletes Helping Athletes Program for his school.

DeTillio is captain of both the girls varsity soccer and varsity softball teams. She has received the MVP award for both softball and soccer. DeTillio is a member of the Key Club, Yearbook Club and is involved in peer leadership for the Athletes Helping Athletes Program. DeLutri volunteers her time for the Disability Services with the Knights of Columbus.
