Students of the week bring important guests and lessons to Northside

Mrs. Dalton and Mrs. Turano's class at Northside Elementary School in Farmingdale recognizes a different star of the class each week. During this week, the se- lected student decides whom he/ she will invite to the classroom as a special guest. Christopher Schultz chose to bring in his father who is a police officer for the Nassau County Police Department. Officer Schultz was able to bring his expertise into the classroom in order to reinforce street safety. Each student took home their own set of fingerprints and an I.D. kit. Brendan Cashman has also had the honor of being Student of the Week. He chose to bring in family friends who work for North Shore University's stop smoking program. The students were actively engaged about the hazards of smoking. Through various demonstrations, they discovered all of the dangerous chemicals contained in cigarettes and witnessed how actual diseased lungs cannot properly inflate. Student of the Week provides an enriching way to link the student's life outside the school into the classroom.
