Construction of new Motor Vehicle office is driving residents away

Dear Editor:

Several weeks ago I wrote about the construction of a State Motor Vehicle Office in the Carman's Mill Mall. Those few lines can now serve as an introduction as to what happened after the construction started.

My son and my two granddaughters came to my house and asked if they might stay with me. It seems that the construction crew was cutting up concrete and the dust and odors produced by this action were being blown into the nearby homes. The children seemed to be affected by this dusty condition.

I decided to investigate this condition further. I drove to the construction site and found mounds of what appeared to be fine white sand. I took photographs of the area. While looking at these mounds I saw a worker wearing a mask and operating a piece of machinery. A white cloud was emanating from the machine and the prevailing wind was blowing it towards my automobile with me inside. I became frightened that this dust would enter the automobile and affect me and possibly also the mechanism of my auto. I had seen enough. I fled away from the location.

The various levels of government were apprised of the condition but no action was taken either by the State, County or Town of Oyster Bay. The residents have been completely ignored. My family is afraid to return home. They are worried that this might be a similar situation to the Twin Towers debacle, where the dust was found to be a danger to one's health. We need help. It would appear that this is a situation sometimes referred to as "Something Is Rotten In Denmark."
