Massapequa athletes invited to 20th anniversary Runner's Edge Triathlon

Athletes from the Massapequas are invited to enter the 20th anniversary Runner's Edge - TOBAY Triathlon, Long Island's largest triathlon, Sunday, August 19 at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster. The distances are a one kilometer swim in Oyster Bay Harbor, a 15 kilometer bike through Oyster Bay Cove and a five kilometer run up to the Planting Fields Arboretum and back to the finish at Roosevelt Park. This is an event that is perfect for first timers, but yet is challenging enough to satisfy the veteran triathlete.

The event is dedicated to the memory of Gerald Kaufman, one of the founding members of the Greater Long Island Running Club, triathlete and good friend, who suffered a fatal heart attack last December.

The Runner's Edge-TOBAY Triathlon gives athletes an opportunity to have some fun and do some good at the same time, since major portions of the proceeds of the event will be distributed to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Oyster Bay based Friends of the Bay and the new Gerald Kaufman Memorial Fund, whose sole purpose is to provide assistance to local athletes and their families in times of personal financial emergency.

A Runner's Edge-TOBAY Triathlon Clinic will be held Thursday, May 17 in the auditorium of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Saturday, August 18 will offer a Runner's Edge- TOBAY Junior Triathlon for youngsters age eight through 13 with a 200 yard swim, a 2.5 mile bike and one mile run, all within the confines of Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. There will be medals for all finishers. The entry fee is $20 and limited to 200 youngsters. Last year's race closed out several weeks beforehand, so register early.

The entry fee for the Runner's Edge-TOBAY Triathlon is $45 if you register by May 31, which is reduced to $35 if you are a resident of the Town of Oyster Bay. The entry fee jumps to $55 on June 1 and $70 after June 30 (less $10 for TOBAY residents).

If you are not up for a Triathlon, the event also features a team competition, with each team member doing one of the three legs of the triathlon. The team entry fee through May 31 is $30 per team member. The team fee goes to $35 per team member on June 1 and $45 per team member after June 30. There is a $6 discount from all fees for TOBAY residents.

For more information and/or entry booklet, call the Greater Long Island Running Club office at 349- 7646. You can also register online at www.glirc.org. You can experience the event as a volunteer by calling Coordinator of Volunteers Mindy Davidson at 520-9481 before 9 p.m.

Getting together to announce plans for the 20th Anniversary Runner's Edge-TOBAY Triathlon, left to right, are Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rose Walker, Triathlon Co-Directors Jose Lopez and Ray Farrell, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Executive director Tammy Philie, Runner's Edge proprietor Bob Cook, Friends of the Bay Executive Director Kyle Rabin and Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto.
