School yourself on candidates running for your school board In school districts throughout New York State, voters will be asked to vote not only on a proposed school budget but also for members of their school boards. There is no more direct form of representation than at the school board level, and voters should be wise, educated and decisive when they head to the polls. School board members have a unique role in that they set school policies and procedures; they are authized by law to provide oversight of the educators and administrators and to work with them to develop curriculum. They are the chief financial officers whose responsibility it is to put together a budget that not only meets the needs of the students but also of the public that supports education at the local level. Their job is often difficult and frustrating, but also rewarding. How they vote on the board, and what contribution they make to your school district is often a question of their outlook and educational philosophy.
Most work very hard, but their power to direct the future of your schools and your community is tremendous. It is incumbent upon every citizen to learn about who the candidates are who are seeking office, where they stand on issues that are important and getting to the polls on Tuesday, May 15. Doing less is ceding your future to others.
