Westfield Sunrise Mall hosts Youth for Outreach Walk-A-Thon

On Saturday, January 20, Westfield Sunrise Mall opened its doors at 8:30 a.m. to welcome 410 fourth, fifth and sixth grade religious education students of St. Rose of Lima Church to its first Youth for Outreach Walk- A-Thon, encouraged by their parents and catechists who joined them in the walk. The children raised over $10,600 for the benefit of several local families which have suffered recent hardships, as well as the Parish Outreach, Madonna House and Catholic Charities. Msgr. Daniel Hurley, Deacon and Mrs. Dennis O'Connor and Deacon Frank Flood also came out to give their support and encouragement to the walkers during the event. Many classes prepared inspirational posters to carry along the way, announcing their call to stewardship to others in our community. Water was supplied by King Kullen for all participants and volunteers.

Youth for Outreach was developed into a parishwide element of the religious education program at S.t rose of Lima in 2004. Its mission to implement and foster stewardship on all grade levels of faith formation for children has become an exciting and enriching

endeavor for both the students and the community. By embracing stewardship in their formative years of development, children come to recognize their call to discipleship and mature into faithful stewards in the world at large.

"Our parish community is so proud of the children that are called to put their faith into action by sharing their time, talent and treasures participating in our community service events. they continue to remind us that, young or old, we each make a difference in our world," shared Eileen Conneely, director of religious education.
