East Lake elementary students in Massapequa learn life lessons at Commerce Plaza

East Lake Elementary School students in the Massapequa Public Schools recently spent at day at Commerce Plaza, located in Plainedge Packard Middle School, where the lessons they are engaged in on a daily basis transcended the classroom, and came to life in this "mock town." At Commerce Plaza, students practice their life skills, mathematics and economics concepts, and cooperate to es- tablish and run their own business for a day. There is even a student who serves as the Mayor, running the town and completing tasks that would be expected of such a public official. At the end of the day, each business tallies the day's receipts to determine profitability and employees are given "paychecks," for their day of labor.

Shown in the photo are East Lakers after a productive day at Commerce Plaza.
