Fifth graders at Albany Avenue School conduct business at Commerce Plaza

Fifth-grade students at Farmingdale's Albany Avenue School spent a day as an adult in the business world. Commerce Plaza offered the students a hands-on learning experience of the business world. The students ran a business community complete with a mayor, a newspaper, a telephone company, a real estate business, warehouse and even a McDonald's. Advertising became an important aspect of the learning process teaching students to connect their businesses with the public. Students learned how to write their own checks, pay bills and budget their own money. As a business community they learned the importance of working together and communication with others. The business world simulation was an extension of the economic unit discussed in class focusing on ideas such as profit, surplus, interdependence, and supply and demand.
