Farmingdale HS students play active role in childcare study lab

High school students play an active role in childcare as part of the Farmingdale High School Child Study Lab. This program is intended to help prepare students for careers in teaching and childcare. Under their teacher and mentor, Mrs. Lynne Brewer, students learned responsibility and to grow as young adults.

The focus of the Child Study Lab is to aid all personally, financially and in any other way possible. While much of the learning experience occurs theoretically in the classroom, students are actively involved in the process as well. Working in teams, the students prepare and plan lessons for their target audience, children. In a class of twenty-eight preschoolers, the class is divided into three manageable groups, dependent on maturity and age. Second-year lab students Jaclyn Lacamera and Bridget Dackow both agree that working in the child lab program has taught them the value of patience. The two agree, "We have learned to reinforce positive discipline and teach chil- dren with compassion, using techniques most beneficial to them."

The Child Study Lab students find themselves going above and beyond their expectations within the community. Students have become active in both large and smallscale food drives, the AHRC foundation, and various other volunteer projects. This year alone, the students participated in both the Breast Cancer and AHRC walks and volunteered at the AHRC Christmas party. One of the greatest accomplishments of the Lab was raising a large sum of money based off of donations from countless bake sales. The money was donated to two of Farmingdale's needy families for a Merry Christmas.

This hands-on experience has been extremely helpful for those that plan on going into the field of childcare and/or teaching. The myriad of skills the students learned will benefit them both personally and professionally. Each experience was unique and proved to be beneficial for the children, the community and the students themselves.
