Massapequa school district links education and business

The Massapequa School District has teamed up with the Long Island Works Coalition, an organization that works to bridge the gap between education and business. Through training provided by Long Island Works, the district is currently in the process of creating an advisory board, consisting of educators, administrators, guidance counselors, parents, students, and members of the business community. Long Island Works offers many resources for the district, including the Speaker's Bureau, which is a list of more than three hundred speakers from the business community who volunteer to go into schools to share their expertise on their industry, skills needed, educational requirements, and career opportunities.

Robert Russo, a ninth grade math teacher at Massapequa High School's Ames Campus, recently took advantage of the Speaker's Bureau, and invited Steve Gottlieb, from LSB Capital, to share his business expertise with his classes. Gottlieb spoke to Russo's class about the importance of math in everyday life, and showed the students how they can use what they learn in class, such as ratios and graphs, to make decisions about investing in the stock market. He also illustrated how he uses math in his everyday life, which helped students understand the significance of what they learn in school. Students were very enthusiastic about what Gottlieb had to say and left with some great investing tips as well.

Anyone interested in joining the Massapequa Advisory Board can email Denise DeLury at ddelury@msd.k12.ny.us.
