Intel Semi-Finalist makes Scientific Sandwich

Sean Feiner, an Intel Finalist from Farmingdale High School, demonstrated his winning research for the Board of Education in a powerpoint presentation. On March 7, Feiner enlightened the room about his research entitled, Not So Tasty: Synthesis and Crystallization of Heteroleptic Cerium Sandwich Porphyrinate. Quite a mouthful for the room, Feiner began his presentation with the understanding of how to pronounce the title of his work.

Throughout his presentation, Feiner attempted to help those present to understand his work by making generic and simple generalizations and analogies. His humor was a nice departure from the expected misunderstandings that would occur from a well- developed research project. As Sean explained, his work is relatable to making a toasty deli sandwich; porphyrins representing pieces of bread, cerium, a nice piece of deli meat and the synthesis reaction is similar to the toasting process. Unfortunately, Sean's sandwich is not for eating.

Sean's fine work has made him an Intel Semi-Finalist this year. He will be attending Brown University in the fall.
