Minority Recruitment for Police Exam deadline June 8

As Chair of the Minority Affairs Committee in the Nassau County Legislature and also the first Latino ever elected to office in the County, I am excited and proud to announce a major initiative to increase minority participation in the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD). This year the NCPD is seeking minority and woman candidates to take the County Police Service Exam scheduled for August 13 to18 this summer. The deadline for registering for the exam is June 8th. It is paramount that we get the word out to minority communities. County Executive Suozzi and I are working to increase participation of minorities in our police ranks.

Currently, of the 2668 sworn members of the Nassau County Police only 10.8 percent of them are women. Furthermore 89.2 percentof all sworn members are white, leaving only 4.3 percent Black, 5.4 percent Hispanic, .7 percent Asian, and .2 percent Indian. Those numbers are appalling considering the actual makeup of the 1.3 million residents residing in Nassau County. That is why we are refocusing our recruitment efforts to better reflect area's of need. There will be no lowering of standards or special privileges given to increase minority numbers. Everyone who wishes to become a Nassau County Police Officer must still present the same qualities as always: Honesty, Bravery, Commitment, and a true desire to help the community. These are the tenants of becoming one of Nassau's Finest.

In return for protecting and serving the public our police enjoy some of the finest compensation in the country for law enforcement. Starting salary is $34,000 a year and increases to $91,737 after eight years of service. Officers receive 15 paid vacation days to start, increasing to 30 days after 15 years of service, full paid health and dental benefits, twenty year non-contributory pension, and several other fringe benefits.

I urge every eligible member of the community to enroll for the exam by filling out an application. This is a great opportunity for our younger generations to obtain a good living through community work with fair compensation. A career as a police officer offers a very competitive salary, great benefits, stable employment and dozens of career advancement opportunities. Most importantly, a police officer has a chance to serve as a role model and to impact our communities in a positive way.

Applications can be obtained at any Nassau County Police Precinct, Highway Patrol Bureau, Police Headquarters in Mineola, the Nassau County Civil Service Office, or by contacting the Nassau County Police Recruitment Section at 1- 800-RECRUIT (1-800-732-7848). Candidates must be at least 17 years of age and not have reached their 35th birthday on the date of the written exam. Stipulations regarding age are available for military service or terminal leave of up to six years subtracted from the age of any applicant who has passed their 35th birthday.
