Supervisor's Cup competition coming this weekend

American Idol finalist Kevin Covais greets fans at last year's event. He's expected to return to Massapequa for this year's Supervisor's Cup.
Building on the success of the first Supervisor's Cup last year to benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research, members of the Massapequa Lacrosse Club are holding the second annual event Friday, June 8. The opening is at 6 p.m. at John Burns Park, with the Massapequa High School Varsity/JV girls lacrosse game beginning at 7 p.m. The Massapequa Men's Alumni lacrosse game starts at 8 p.m.

On Saturday and Sunday, teams from throughout the tri-state area will be playing at John Burns Park and the Field of Dreams, beginning at 8 a.m. More than 100 teams are expected to participate.

"We think this is going to be even bigger and better than last year's event," said John Lynott, one of the organizers. The event, which raised approximately $45,000 last year, is co sponsored by the Massapequa Lacrosse Club and the Town of Oyster Bay.

More than 90 teams from all over Long Island and the tri-State area participated in the event and more than 200 games were played last year. This year, the organizers said they expect even more.

Again this year, American Idol Kevin Covais, who is from Long Island, will sing the national anthem and lead the Walk for a Cure. Diabetes eff ects more than 20 million people, many of them children with the most serious form of the disease, in the United States, and organizations like the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation help to fight the disease and are trying to find a cure.

"Fundraising efforts like ours, are key," said Lynott, whose son Jonathan, was diagnosed with the disease two years ago.

Organizers invite everyone to take part in the Supervisor's Cup this year. "Come out this weekend on the 8th, 9th and 10th, and give of your time," said one volunteer. "Help us beat this thing and give young men like Jonathan Lynott a chance at a better life."
