Town adopts 2007 clean energy plan The Oyster Board Town Board recently adopted the 2007 annual Clean Energy Action Plan, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto, noting that the Town of Oyster Bay was the first Town on Long to adopt an annual plan back in 2005. "In 2004, I formed the Green Energy Task Force to develop a plan that includes both long and short term goals," Supervisor Venditto said. "I told the Task Force that the plan could include everything from recommendations for making building energy improvements, reducing the Town's reliance on fossil fuels by purchasing green power and developing our own sources of green power such as solar; wind or wave to increasing the Town's use of energy efficient vehicles and equipment such as computers, copiers, fax machines and heating/cooling products, as well as recycled products, and developing guidelines on how Town employees can save energy in their daily routines. The plan could also include recommendations for changes in the Town Building Code to make future home and commercial construction and reconstruction more energyefficient. "The Task Force recently submitted an action plan for 2007, which the Town Board has now adopted," the Supervisor continued. "The plan calls for the Task Force to continue assessing the Town's use of green energy sources and how more green energy might be incorporated into the daily operation of the Town through such venues as the use of energy star products in Town construction projects, alternative fuel vehicles, and solar and wind power at Town facilities. It also provides for the Task Torce to continue meeting with energy agencies and authorities to keep abreast of various options for assessing the energy we now use, the alternatives available, and the sources of technical and financial assistance that are available to us."
Supervisor Venditto went on to say that the Town of Oyster Bay has already taken a leadership role in energy conservation and reducing greenhouse emissions. "Last December, the Town Board adopted a local law mandating compliance with the guidelines of the New York Energy Star Labeled Homes Program for all new one- and two-family homes, as well as multi-family dwellings. Our Public Lighting Bureau has begun a pilot program using a new, more efficient type of street lighting. The Department of General Services has received, and is reviewing, three responses to an RFP to contract with an energy service company ("ESCO") to perform an energy audit at one or more Town facilities. The Town also received a grant for the conversion of three recycling trucks to hybrid electric/diesel. The conversion of the first truck is nearly complete. Additionally, the Town is also purchasing and using biodiesel fuel in Town vehicles and using 'green energy' to partially power one of our community centers.
