ToBay to sponsor hurricane preparedness seminar According to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella, top hurricane experts are predicting that the 2007 hurricane season will be above average. The Councilman advises residents to be prepared throughout the season, which runs from June 1 through November 30. "Long Island has not had a major hurricane in several years," Councilman Muscarella stated, "but we should not become complacent. In the 2007 season, which officially runs from June 1 through November 30, experts are predicting more than the average amount of hurricanes forming and an increased likelihood of them reaching landfall. The season actually got off to an early start during the second week of May with Andrea becoming the first named storm of the season, stirring up the surf and causing beach erosion and other damage from Florida to North Carolina. Any one of the storms could turn out to be 'the big one.' Disastrous hurricanes have struck in seasons with normal, and even below-normal, activity. Since it takes only one storm to devastate a community, everyone has to know what to do in the event a hurricane is headed for our area. To help residents prepare, the Town is sponsoring two Hurricane Seminars. The first is slated for Wednesday, June 20, 7 p.m. at the Syosset Fire Department, Cold Spring Road and Orchard Street, Syosset. The second will be held on Thursday, June 21, 7 p.m. at the Massapequa West End Firehouse, Hicksville Road, (Rte. 107) and Brooklyn Avenue, Massapequa. Councilman Muscarella noted that the Town of Oyster Bay's Hurricane Preparedness Guide is another important source of information for residents. "It offers many helpful hints on how to be prepared for a hurricane or a nor'easter, a close cousin of a hurricane," Councilman Muscarella said. "The guide, can be obtained at Town Halls North (Oyster Bay) and South (Massapequa), the Department of Public Works (Syosset) and at major park facilities, or write to the Town of Oyster Bay Public Information Office, Town Hall East, 54 Audrey Ave., Oyster Bay, N.Y. 11771 or call 624-6380. Information can also be found on the Town's Web site, www.oysterbaytown.com.
"Hurricanes are one of the most damaging, and potentially deadly, weather events, with nor'easters right behind them," Councilman Muscarella. "Both types of storms can have devastating impacts on the economy, but, more important, the human toll can be very high when people aren't prepared. I urge you to attend one of the Town's Hurricane Seminars to learn how you can protect your family in the event of a hurricane or nor'easter and take steps to ensure that you and your family will be prepared should a hurricane or nor'easter find its way to Long Island."
