Ward Smith of Smitty's Home Improvements
by Tiffany Elliott

Longtime Massapequa Park resident and family man Seward "Ward" Scott Smith, Jr. died at his home in Summerville, South Carolina on May 22, 2007. He was 68 years old.

He helped many local seniors and busy people with his business, Smitty's Home Improvements, which he ran from his Massapequa Park home for about 15 years.

Born in Brooklyn on August 1, 1938 to Seward Scott and Lillia (nee Bearns), he later lived on Philadelphia Avenue Massapequa Park for 30 years. An avid boater and fisherman, his daughter Kathryn said he was also the consummate family man.

"We ate dinner together every night and took family vacations before it was commonplace," she said.

After retiring to South Carolina in 1989, he delved into volunteer work for many organizations, such as the Charleston Ballet Theatre, Spoleto & Piccolo Festivals, the Charleston Preservation Society, the Historic Charleston Foundation, the South Carolina Aquarium, the National Park Service, Friends of the Dock Street Theatre and the Middleton Place Foundation.

Mr. Smith leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Ellen (nee Kirshner); his children: Scott C. and his wife Ruth of Dix Hills, Deborah Ann Payne of Moncks Corner, South Carolina and Kathryn Ellen Tsoukatos and her husband George of Massapequa Park; his grandchildren: David A. Marroun of Summerville, South Carolina, Michael Tsoukatos of Massapequa Park and Rachel Marie and Daniel Scott of Dix Hills; his sister, Eleanor Johnson of El Cajon, California; his sister in-law, Ann F. Miller of Wilmington, Delaware.

A Funeral Mass was held at the Dorchester Presbyterian Church in South Carolina on May 25, 2007 followed by private cremation. Arrangements were handled by Parks Funeral Home, Inc., Summerville, South Carolina.

Donations in Mr. Smith's name can be sent to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, South Carolina 29406. Friends are asked to visit Mr. Smith's guest book at www.charleston.net/deaths.
