Lacrosse teams compete for a good cause
In a sport that's recognized for its rough and tumble style, 152 teams from as far as Connecticut and Virginia came out and showed their tender side when they paid $350 each to play three games during the event with proceeds going to charity. Massapequa Lacrosse board president John Lynott and his 23 board members came up with the idea after Lynott's 13 year old son, Jonathan was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes two years ago. "Last year we raised $43,000 and this year we're hoping for $70,000. These teams come from far and wide to raise this money," said Lynott adding that he's pleased the event became so large. "The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation believes we're saints for doing this but we just want to help kids like John have a chance at a better life." "I was honored when they chose us as a beneficiary last year but I never dreamed they would pick us every year to raise money for. They are just amazing and we couldn't be happier", said Barbara Rogas, Executive Director of the L.I. Chapter of The Juve- nile Diabetes Research Foundation in Melville. Team players, who ranged from students in grades one to 12, men over 35 and women in post collegiate teams, played at the same time on John Burn's Field, the Massapequa High School Field, Berner Middle School Field and the Field of Dreams. One player we spoke to, 17 year old Jim Ostratt from Mineola said that he looks forward to this every year. "It's nice to be able to forget about winning so much," he said. "Not that we don't like winning, but there are other things that are more important, like curing this disease." The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to co-sponsor the event. "This is the kind of event that makes me say that Massapequa and the Town of Oyster Bay is a great place to live," said Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto. "It's an example of the good things that happen when residents and government get together." Diabetes affects more than 20 million people in the United States, many of them children with the most serious form of the disease. Organizations like the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation are trying to find a cure.
