Jenna Devine: Beloved Massapequa Park 8th Grader
by Tiffany Elliott

Jenna Elizabeth Devine, an active teenager who played sports, took dance lessons and was a Girl Scout, died May 31, 2007 after her brave five and a-halfyear battle with brain cancer. She was 14 years old.

"She was the most terrific little girl. She never complained and asked why me," said Joanne Waters, a social worker at Berner Middle School who nicknamed her Pinkie because of her love of the color.

"In fact she taught the kids in her school kindness because she never said a mean word about anyone. She was an angel."

Born December 12, 1992 in Massapequa Park, she attended McKenna Elementary School and Berner Middle School. She played in the Massapequa Soccer and the Massapequa International Softball Leagues, took dance lessons, played the piano and the guitar and was a dedicated Brownie and Girl Scout.

When she was in third grade, she was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor and bravely underwent five surgeries, radiation treatments and dozens of chemotherapy sessions. During it all, she continued to smile her wonderful smile, according to her family who called her a "real fighter."

She was well-loved by many people and had even had the honor of illuminating the Christmas Tree in Massapequa Park one season. She generously volunteered at the Park Boulevard Deli, participated in the Relay for Life at Massapequa High School, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual Gelatin Jump and held bake sales for the Luke Nuehedel Foundation to raise money for other children with cancer.

Jenna leaves behind her loving parents: Karen and Gerard; her brother, Eric; her grandparents: George and Fran O'Brien and John and Claire Devine; her 19 aunts and uncles, more than 25 cousins and many, many friends.

She reposed at the Massapequa Funeral Home North Chapel, 1050 Park Boulevard, Massapequa Park on June 2 and 3, 2007. A Funeral Mass was held at the church she attended, St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church in Massapequa on June 4, 2007 followed by interment in Grace Cemetery in Massapequa.

Donations in her name can be sent to The Friends of Karen, Inc., 118 Titicus Road, Purdys, NY, 10578 or online at www.FriendsofKaren.org.
