Massapequa HS foreign language festival attracts record numbers
Massapequa High School's Third Annual Foreign Language Festival drew crowds of record numbers this year, with more than 500 people attending an evening filled with culture, food and fun. Students from Berner Middle School, Ames High School Campus and the Main High School Campus, along with by staff members, families and community vendors, and enjoyed by all in attendance. American Sign Language (ASL) students hosted the ASL Circus, where participants took place in "hands on" activities to learn the signs for various animals and their habitats, and to learn colors in ASL while having their faces painted. Dancing was a big part teachers in the foreign language department, worked collaboratively to organize and facilitate the event, teaching lessons and running cultural activities for community members who turned out for the event. Samplings of food from various cultures, including Italian, Spanish, French and German were prepared of the celebration, with Irish Step Dancers who provided entertainment, and members of the district Foreign Language Department who provided lessons to anyone who wanted to put on their dancing shoes. High School Principal Dr. James Grossane was visibly impressed with his first Foreign Language Festival. "This is a wonderful display of cooperation and hard work," he commented.
