Hearing set on proposed building moratorium for the Massapequas The Town of Oyster Bay Board will be considering a six-month building moratorium in parts of Massapequa designed to give theTown time to review its zoning code and enact changes that are in accordance with the Town's vision for the future. A similar moratorium was put into place last year for other parts of the Town following a building boom that raised concerns about overdevelopment and development that is not in accordance with the character of the community. A public hearing on the question will be held Tuesday, July 10, and residents will be able to have input into the question. If adopted, the measure would halt the issuance of any building permits for new or expanded building construction, and would eliminate multi-family homes in non-residential districts. Although this hearing will concern Massapequa only, south of Merrick Road, the plan is to extend the moratorium to the rest of the Massapequas. "The moratorium is not being done town-wide but rather community by community because each has specific needs and concerns," said Town Supervisor John Venditto. In 2004, it was decided that a temporary halt would be put on building in the Town after several townhouse subdivisions went up in non-residential areas. Some were overdeveloped, said Town officials. Since that time, several hamlets in the Town have underwent studies and moratoriums.
The six months will give the Town time to come up with a plan for the Massapequa-south area and will include checking current zoning, block by block, said Town officials. The meeting is at 10 a.m. Town Hall, Audrey Ave., Oyster Bay.
