Lee Kanner: Distinguished Journalist & Copy Editor
Born July 20, 1915 in Brooklyn to Russian immigrants, he always wanted to be a newspaperman. According to his family, he said he wasn't Jewish in order to get work at that time. He worked as a sports editor in North Carolina and an editor in Newark, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before moving to the Times in 1952 where he filled many roles: copy editor, assistant financial editor, assistant sports editor, news editor of the international edition, western U.S. editor, final review editor and night supervisor of the news desk. In addition to newspapers, he coauthored several books such as "The Kennedy Years" and a book about his question & answer columns in the Times. He even wrote a musical play about Massapequa during the 1950s called "Make Mine Massapequa," which he performed at the Massapequa Jewish Center. He lived on Herbert Avenue inMassapequa from 1953 to 1999 at which time they relocated to Oakdale, Coconut Creek, Florida and most recently in Lido Beach, New York. In his spare time he was an avid reader and family man who took his grandchildren on trips to Europe and all over the United States. Mr. Kanner leaves behind his children: Andrea Wasserman of Lido Beach, Dr. Steven Kanner of Lincoln, Massachusetts and Dr. Ellen Kanner of Huntington; his seven grandchildren; his four greatgrandchildren; his sister: Anne Suttenberg of Portland, Oregon; and his ten nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 69 years Elsie, a 25- year Massapequa School District art teacher.
He reposed at the Guttermans Memorial Chapel, Woodbury on June 20, 2007. Interment followed in New Montefiore Cemetery in Farmingdale.
