Arsonists torch playground at St. Rose of Lima School

A fire that police said was intentionally set damaged the playground and classrooms at St. Rose of Lima School in Massapequa. Police said that the fire broke out at approximately 3:50 p.m. Saturday, July 7, at the school, 4704 Merrick Road. By the time police and firefighters arrived, the playgound was fully in flames, said Massapequa Fire Chief Tom Kennelly. In photo, left, a shocked community watches as firefighters battle blaze. At right, police and firefighters work to bring the fire under control. No injuries were reported though there was extensive damage. The Nassau County Arson-Bomb squad is continuing their investigation. Anyone with information on the blaze should call them at 516-573-5550. Calls will be kept confidential.
