Arsonists torch playground at St. Rose of Lima School
A fire that police said was intentionally set damaged the playground and classrooms at St. Rose of Lima School in Massapequa. Police said that the fire broke out at approximately 3:50 p.m. Saturday, July 7, at the school, 4704 Merrick Road. By the time police and firefighters arrived, the playgound was fully in flames, said Massapequa Fire Chief Tom Kennelly. In photo, left, a shocked community watches as firefighters battle blaze. At right, police and firefighters work to bring the fire under control. No injuries were reported though there was extensive damage.
