Massapequa Creek Stream Augmentation and Pond Restoration Project underway Legislator Peter J. Schmitt, Minority Leader of the Nassau County Legislature, has announced that after years of planning and environmental testing, the Legislature has adopted the final environmental statement and the "Massapequa Creek Stream Augmentation and Pond Restoration Project" is finally under way. "I have been working tirelessly to ensure that the improvements to the Massapequa Creek Preserve are a priority for the Nassau County Legislature, and I am happy to report that the work is finally going to begin," said Legislator Schmitt. The county is mandated under federal regulation to correct certain streamflow conditions caused by the installation of sewer systems. In Massapequa, local sewer systems have lowered the pond and lake levels and reduced the streamflow throughout the Massapequa Creek Preserve. The restoration project includes the installation of a shallow well pumping system, the dredging of several ponds, and the diversion of storm water runoff. This project will restore the continuous flow of the Creek in order to protect wetland plant species and wildlife, and potentially expand the fisheries within the lakes and ponds.
