William Russell: WWII Veteran & NYC Transit employee

Retired New York City Transit worker William J. Russell valued his large family above all else and loved to spend time with them. The Massapequa resident died June 12, 2007, surrounded by his wife and children. He was 80 years old.

Mr. Russell lived in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn and Richmond Hill, Queens before moving to Massapequa ten years ago. He was a proud World War II veteran who served in the Pacific.

He worked at the former Sperry Gyroscope in Nassau County and later was a car inspector for the N.Y.C. transit system for 20 years until his retirement.

According to his wife he was a Giants and Mets fan who raised and cared for canaries in their home.

Mr. Russell leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Nancy; his children: Nancy Angelini, Cathleen DiBenedetto and her husband Michael, Marylou McGuiness and her husband Charlie, AnneMarie Plaia and her husband Frank, Jenifer Micieli and her husband Frank and William and his wife Linda; and his 17 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Frank Angelini.

He reposed at the Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home, Seaford. A Mass of Christian Burial was said at Maria Regina R.C. Church on June 15, 2007 followed by interment in St. Charles Cemetery.
