Chase Bank Slated for bustling Massapequa Park corner Massapequa Park residents can get more information and provide input on a proposed two lane drive-thru bank for the South Gate Shopping Center at a public hearing to be held on Monday, July 30. The one-story J.P. Morgan Chase Bank is slated to replace a former gas station at 4900 Merrick Road on the corner of Whitewood Drive, which sits across from the Massapequa School District offices and the Massapequa High School. After going back and forth on the plans, Mayor Jim Altadonna said the newest blueprints are "300 percent better than what we started with." According to Altadonna, the Village works with the owner of the shopping center and not the individual store owners who lease space there. Initially, the property owner gave the Village plans for a twostory CVS pharmacy, which the Village turned down. The new plans for the bank show no entrances or exits on either Merrick Road or Whitewood Drive which the Village believed would have interfered with traffic flow and pedestrian safety. Instead, thoroughfares into and out of the 4,080 square-foot bank will be from within the shopping center's parking lot, and the exit will be bottle-necked to provide space for only one car to leave the bank at a time. According to landscaping plans, the currently bare lot is due to be prettied up with red maples, dogwoods and azaleas. "We think this building will really enhance the corner that has sat vacant for more than a year," said Altadonna.
The hearing will be held at 8 p.m. at Village Hall, 151 Front Street, Massapequa Park.
