Flaherty dismissal continues to promote speculation
By Gracemarie Rozea

In recent years, the Massapequa School District has incorporated Character Education into its curriculum. We teach our children to speak up for others when they see injustice. As parents we also need to model those behaviors and so I chose to do so by writing this commentary.

Recently, the Massapequa Board of Education took action to suspend our Superintendent, Dr. Maureen E. Flaherty. Letters were sent home to parents of students, but not to all community members. As taxpayers, all community members living within the boundaries of the Massapequa School district have the right to know what actions the citizens they have elected to serve on our school board take. Unfortunately, neither the letter nor the comments made at School Board meetings elaborate on the reasons for taking such action - other than to say that there was no theft, child abuse, or sexual harassment. There was no opportunity for discussion of this topic at our School Board meetings. It leaves people to wonder and speculate, and opens the door for many unfounded rumors to spread through our community. This is, at best, irresponsible activity by certain factions within the school board elected with a fiduciary responsibility to the community.

As a community member who has had the opportunity to work with Dr. Flaherty for the past two years in a volunteer capacity, I would like to share some of my experiences. I have been involved in PTA since my children entered the Massapequa School district, with my involvement reaching a higher level in the past several years. I have served as the president of the Birch Lane PTA, president of the Massapequa Council of PTAs, and most recently was appointed by the New York State PTA to serve as the director for Nassau Region PTA. Although this letter does not reflect any PTA position, it is as a parent that I express deep concern.
