Massapequa family is millionth FIOs customer
"Before our internet connection would go out when we needed it the most and we live on the computer," said Rich Bayer, a certified public accountant who lives and works from his home on Brewster Road. "So we decided to make the change back to Verizon." The Bayer family, Rich, Marjorie and their kids, Matt, Leigha and Hannah were the stars of the show on last month when Verizon came out to thank them for ordering their new FiOS internet service, cameras and gifts in tow. "When my daughter told me they had won, I told her that she better investigate the whole thing," laughed Florence Karmel, Marjorie's mother, who said it sounded too good to be true. "We're delighted to celebrate this day with the Bayer's because we appreciate that they, along with more than a million others, are leading the digital lifestyle revolution," said Virginia Rusterholz, president of Verizon Telecom, who surprised the family at their door, Publisher's Clearinghouse-style. Not only did Verizon present the family an oversized $10,000 check for Sights and Sounds, a local electronic center but the company also brought a special guest to the event for 18-year-old Matt Bayer, a Massapequa High School baseball star- Yankee's legend Rich "Goose" Gossage. "I can't believe it," said Matt. "I didn't get to see him play but he is a legend and a great role model." Gossage spoke with the family and signed baseballs for everyone in the Bayer's front yard. "We're a multi-generational Yankee fan family. This is an honor," said Rich.
Even Verizon employees, Fred and Stephanie, who took the order and installed the equipment, were on hand and thanked with plaques commemorating the company's one-millionth sale of the service that was introduced in September 2005.
