Attacks against Arlene Martin are sour grapes

Dear Editor:

It was with utter disbelief that I read Gary T. Bennett's letter to the Editor in your July 18, 2007 edition. In May 2006, I wrote a letter to the Editor correcting the false statements in Mr. Bennett's paid political advertisement in his third unsuccessful run for the School Board. I have been a community member of the School District's Finance Committee for over eight years and during the tenure of three School District Superintendents. At that time, Arlene Martin was recently elected to the School Board. During this period of time, Massapequa School District's financial credit rating was upgraded twice by Moody Financial Services. We have come from a School District that operated in the red and borrowed money every year to make payroll to a School District that now has financial security, reserves and a much-improved credit rating. The Massapequa School District was cited by the NYS Comptroller as a model for fiscal responsibility.

Six years ago each of our six elementary schools used different textbooks and curriculum for the same grade levels. Today, all of the elementary schools in our District have a uniform curriculum and the same textbooks. The test scores of our students have risen. If this is how Mr. Bennett defines "incompetence, nepotism and failure" as well as holding "the people and students in last place", I have no clue where his head is at. There is no justification for his outright lies and attacks on Arlene Martin who has been a huge part of the progress in educational and financial security that the Massapequa School District has achieved over the last nine years. As a member of the Finance Committee, Mr. Bennett is aware of the truth which he chooses to ignore.

From 2000 to 2006, I have attended the three graduations of my sons from Massapequa High School. Contrary to Mr. Bennett's allegations, there has not been any public officials at any of those graduations. Once again, Mr. Bennett has misstated the facts in an effort to mislead the community. After losing three elections for the School Board, I guess Mr. Bennett is starting his election campaign much earlier this time.

Vito V. Mundo, Massapequa
