Beware of Requests for False records

Dear Editor:

A number of my clients have called recently stating they received a letter in the mail advising them they should obtain a certified copy of the deed for their house. One client sent me a copy of the letter she received from New York Record Retrieval, Inc. which I have enclosed, deleting the client's name and address.

The letter states "The U.S. Government Federal Citizen Information Center website recommends that property owners should have an official or certified copy of their deed." I do not know if there is such a website or if the website makes such a recommendation. I do know it is not necessary for a person to have a certified copy of their deed.

The Nassau County Clerk charges $5.20 a page to certify a deed. Other counties charge a similar nominal fee. New York Record Retrieval is making a nice profit charging $59.50 for something a person does not need.

The public should be made aware that they do not need the services of New York Record Retrieval, Inc.

Massapequa Park.
