MSD issues are critical if residents are to gain control of school spending

Dear Editor,

Both Vito Mundo and ousted school board president Arlene Martin wrote letters attacking me and trying to avoid the issues addressed in my letter, namely arrogance, nepotism, politics, inflated administrative salaries, no welcome or transition for newly elected Trustee Tim Taylor and a surprise suspension of a Superintendent three days prior to Ms. Martin's departure. I could go on, but the PR tactics being used here are learned, I fear, from the professional PR firm hired by our School District to provide chosen information.

As far as school performance, it appears Mr. Mundo believes that having uniform text books in our elementary schools is a milestone. To me it's a given. I don't believe he is aware that just last year students were sharing books that were old, faded, torn and missing pages, while our School Board was giving a politically favorite administrator increases from $144,000 to $236,000 in just four years. I'm sorry, but I don't see this as putting the students first. Mr Mundo accused me of providing misinformation. My facts are available at the local library and Massapequa's faltering AP scores came right out of Newsday.

I don't enjoy being the bearer of bad news, but someone has to if we are to gain control of runaway spending that will have us with an almost $200 million budget by 2010. My goals are to rid this district of special interests and politics that are causing poor performance, stuffed pockets and inflated taxes.

There is a bright side. By electing Tim Taylor, the people have severed the head of a political dragon who thought she would rein forever. The people have an opportunity to take back their school district and make changes to benefit the community as a whole, free of politics. If people like Mr.Mundo have issues with my efforts, they should show some character and concern and put their name on the ballot.
