Settle testosterone-charged and costly political fiasco
Editorial

The lawsuit waged against N.C. Leg. Peter Schmitt by Crowe Deegan, a law firm that has been a contributor to the Nassau County Democratic party and done legal work for Democrats including N.C. Exec. Tom Suozzi, is a political mess that is, in the end, going to cost taxpayers. The suit charges that Schmitt defamed the law firm when he made allegations that Crowe Deegan was paid for work it had not done for the county. Schmitt maintains he has evidence to prove his statements. In the middle is N.C. Leg. Dave Mejias, Schmitt's political adversary in Massapequa, who is accused of signing the checks to Crowe Deegan and has responded by trying to pull Schmitt's publicly paid legal representation out from under him.

Politics, hard feelings, anger and chest thumpin' aside, the fact is that after all is said and done, it is the taxpayer, once again, who is going to pick up the tab for this mess. We suggest all sides sit down and work out a solution and save some hard-earned taxpayer money.
