Volunteerism among teens is alive and well

Dear Editor:

Recently, much has been written about the lack of interest in community volunteering among teenagers. I have found just the opposite to be true. During the past summer months, 96 teens took time off from busy summer activities to volunteer at the Plainedge Public Library. Middle and High School students became "Book Buddies" and conducted special storycraft programs for preschoolers. While some teens provided individual computer instruction for senior citizens, others assembled craft kits for children's programs to be held throughout the coming years. Welcome packets for new Library patrons were assembled and bibliographies of interesting books for teens were compiled by the young adults. The interest and enthusiasm in volunteering at the Library shown by our teens was most remarkable with many asking to come back next summer.
