Accidents keep MFD volunteers busy

A 52-year-old Sayville man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated following an automobile accident August 29. In that incident, police said that Bernard McCormack, 52 of Sayville, was traveling west on Pittsburgh Avenue and crossing Hicksville Road when he struck a 1996 Chrysler that was heading west, operated by Victor Mauer, 50 of Seaford. As a result of the collision, the van overturned, struck a U.S. mailbox, and came to rest on the sidewalk.

McCormack's vehicle then struck a 2005 Honda Pilot traveling south on Hicksville Road operated by Donna Pessah, 49 of Massapequa.

Nassau County Police and Massapequa Fire Department volunteers rushed to the scene. Mauer was taken by police ambulance to NUMC where he was treated and released. Pessah was taken by Fire Department Ambulance to New Island Hospital in Bethpage for her injuries. Police said they were not life threatening. McCormack was airlifted by police to NUMC where he was admitted for his injuries and charged with driving while intoxicated. He is scheduled to appear in court to answer those charges at a later date.

Massapequa firefighters handled two other serious incidents and continue to have a very busy year, according to Massapequa Fire Chief Tom Kennelly.

A call for assistance went out Saturday, August 19. Firefighters responded to the Westfield Mall after receiving a call about 3:30 p.m. of a vehicle fire there. Upon their arrival, they found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Additionally, the fire was spreading to a second vehicle, a two-year old BMW parked nearby.

Kennelly said that the driver of the vehicle noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment and pulled into the parking lot, bringing the vehicle to a halt and exiting it. When firefighters arrived, they worked quickly to extingush the blaze, but due to the intensity of the flames, both vehicles sustained considerable damage. Kennelly said the fire was accidental.

On Monday, Aug. 27, another auto accident occurred at approximately 4:10 p.m. on Merrick Road across from John Burns Park. Two vehicles were involved and Massapequqa firefighters, assisted by the Nassau County Police department used the jaws of life to free a female driver of one of the vehicles. Occupants of the vehicles were transported to area hospitals.

Finally, on September 2, a West Babylon man was ejected from his car after hitting the vehicle in front of him. Daniel Morgan, 43, Roland Place, was traveling west on Sunrise Highway at County Line Road in Massapequa when he hit a 1996 Jeep in front of him at 3:30 p.m., suffering serious head trauma. The Jeep then struck a 2003 Chevy. The Jeep's driver, Thomas White, 35, of North Hamilton Ave., Lindenhurst, and his 13- year-old son sustained minor injuries when they collided with a pole and flipped over. The Amityville and Massapequa Fire Departments transported the three wounded to Nassau University Medical Center. The investigation is continuing.
