A lesson from history

Dear Editor:

The August 29 guest editorial on lessons of World War II told part of the story of unconditional surrender. But it did not tell what President Truman had to do to win the peace. He introduced the Marshall Plan and billions of our dollars were spent to build Germany, Italy, Japan and Western Europe. The editorial did not talk about the Berlin Air Lift and the problems we had with stopping the spread of Communism in Western Europe.

Today we are involved in stopping terrorism in the Middle East and the world. The best way to do that is to defeat the terrorists, establish law and order and spread democracy wherever we can. This is a tough job that will take many years to solve.

President Bush is smart and has the guts to face up to this problem. If we do not support him on this issue, we will be stabbing our troops in the back. Let's get behind him and do what is right.
