Massapequa volleyball teams win Wantagh Invitational
BY CAROLYN JAMES

The Massapequa girls volleyball JV and Varsity teams won the Wantagh Invitational tournament, and four players, Samantha Iazetta and Kristen Silk, both 10th graders and Janine Aldridge and Kim Giaquinto were awarded All-tournament status.

The Chiefs defeated teams from Kellenberg, St. Anthony's , Wantagh, Port Washington and West Hempstead on Fri., September 7 and Sat., September 8th.

Other members of the teams included Jenna Bedard, Nicole Cirami, Keri-Lynn Giaquinto, Noelle Grande, Ashley Gubista, Rachel Laines, Victoria Maffeo, Katie Newman, Andrea Walsh and Keri Watson of JV and Tara Annunziata, Samantha Berna, Julie Bies, Katie Bryson, Kelley Collins, Katey Foran, Carolyn Furman, Dana Vosilla and Briana Wallace of Varsity. JV is coached by Mary Anne Abiuso and Varsity is coached by Carolann Habeeb.

This year's JV team consists of nine freshman and three sophomores, who have been named the team captains. Abiuso said they did a tremendous job at the tournament, which was their first game of the season. Part of their success is due, she said, to the leadership of Habeeb who worked with the girls previously, and to the CYO program to which many belong.

"The girls know each other and have a strong background together," said Abiuso. "Any school district that has a strong CYO program means the athletes play double-time," she said, adding that they also look up to their varsity "sisters" who provide great role models for them.
