Hannon hosts 6th annual Senior Health and Awareness Day

Senator Kemp Hannon (R-6th S.D.) is sponsoring his 6th Annual Senior Health and Awareness Day Thursday, October 25, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the David S. Mack Sports Complex at Hofstra University, Earl Ovington Blvd., Uniondale. Se- nior health information, various health screenings, flu shots and information on senior programs such as elder care and long term health care insurance will be available on site.

Senior Citizen Flu Vaccination Program

Flu shots will be dispensed in cooperation with Nassau University Medical Center, Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs and New Island Hospital. There is no out-of-pocket expense to seniors. Nassau County reserves the right to cancel or amend this program depending on vaccine availability.

Influenza immunizations are being offered to senior citizens age 60 and over and to the spouses of senior citizens. Pneumonia vaccine is being offered to persons 65 and older. Seniors need to bring a Medicare card or insurance card if enrolled in such programs.

Influenza can lower one's resistance to infections and lead to debilitating illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia. "Senior citizens are particularly at high risk for contracting influenza and are more likely to suffer serious complications," said Sharon Mullon, Commissioner of the Department of Senior Citizen Affairs. Immunization provided by the vaccine is highly successful in preventing influenza and in minimizing the symptoms for those who do catch it."

Reservations are necessary and can be made on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Wednesday, October 24, by calling Senator Hannon's Community Office at 739-1700 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Free screenings at Senior Health and Awareness Day include blood pressure screening, glaucoma screening, posture screening and body composition analysis. No reservations are necessary for these screenings.

Senior Health and Awareness Day provides seniors with the opportunity to speak with representatives from various health care agencies and programs, as well as gather information on some of the most important health issues facing seniors today. More than 70 state, county and local groups and agencies will be represented at the event.

"I encourage all seniors to come out and enjoy Senior Health & Awareness Day. In order for us to maintain a healthy quality of life we must be conscious of our bodies' needs, and this event will provide the information and testing needed to enhance understanding of personal health," said Hannon.
