Massapequa Park approves Smokin' Al's restaurant
by Tiffany Elliott

The Village of Massapequa Park approved an application for a Smokin' Al's restaurant at 4847 Merrick Road, the site of the former 1-800-Flowers store. The company owns another restaurant in Bay Shore and came before the Village Board at three public hearings, during which the Village accepted public comment about concerns, questions and other issues related to the proposal.

"How can you even consider this application? I can't imagine the problems that will cause," said resident Jim McGuire at the first hearing.

"We are aware of the concerns. We met with them (Smokin' Al's owners) three times, they reduced the seating and I think we now have a viable plan," said Mayor James Altadonna, who added that the plans will include the installation of a filtration system to ensure that fumes and odors from the restaurant do not bother nearby residents. A proposal for valet parking, however, was scrapped.

As a result of the community's concerns, and the changes made to the original application, the Vil- lage extended the comment period until this week. At its meeting Monday night, the board said the concerns were addressed and approved the plan.

In related news,

•the Mayor has signed an agreement with the Village Energy Group of Nassau County, which will enable that company to supply a discounted natural gas supplier for those residents that are interested. Residents can expect a letter from the Mayor on this matter;

•a four-way stop sign is from being considered for the intersection of Broadway and Pittsburgh Avenue in the Village because of speeding traffic.
