Halloween is not a free-for-all day
Editorial

Halloween is coming, and this is a good time to sit down with your children, particularly your teenagers, to discuss how to celebrate the event without causing problems , vandalism, loitering and other behaviors that are unlawful and unacceptable.

This is an issue that we address every year and every year there are dozens of reports about young people who damage homes, disturb residents, flock to the business centers and intimidate the public. That is not any way to celebrate any holiday- it is juvenile delinquency.

Some young people think that Halloween is a day when all of the appropriate behavioral rules are suspended. They believe they have the right to things that they would not ordinarily do. And while that is true to some extent- Halloween is a time to wear costumes and eat lots of candy- the holiday is not a free pass to poor behavior.

Our Police Department does its best on this holiday to keep the problems at a minimum, but the best prescription to law and order is parental involvement. Sit your children down, outline the rules and make sure they know they are being watched and monitored.

And, have a happy Halloween.
