Rolling Thunder athletes recognize supporters

Thunder Athletes present Bob Cook, center, with his award.
Among the highlights of the September 18 general meeting of the Greater Long Island Running Club was a presentation by Steve Cuomo, the head coach of the Rolling Thunder Program for special needs athletes, who gave a brief overview of how his Program has progressed in the past year, assisted by an excellent slide show with some great shots of the Rolling Thunder athletes in action (Thank you Renee Warshauer!).

Cuomo also took the opportunity to bring a bunch of the Rolling Thunder youngsters up to the stage to make a special award presentation to Bob Cook of Farmingdale, proprietor of The Runner's Edge running and triathlon specialty shop on Main Street in Farmingdale, in recognition of Bob's unwavering support for the Rolling Thunder Program.

The Rolling Thunder Special Needs Program (RTSNP) is a non-profit organization set up specifically for physically and mentally challenged athletes. The athletes are given a chance to train in all aspects of running, walking and fitness and they compete at all levels in mainstream competitions. Most importantly, through competition the athletes earn the respect they deserve as they develop the confidence and self-esteem that they need to be successful in life.

"Bob Cook has been a mainstay of our program since its inception," observed Cuomo. "It is both a privilege and a real pleasure to give recognition to his help for our young athletes."
