New Island Hospital to offer free Breast Cancer Lecture by David Kaufman

David Kaufman, M.D., president of the medical staff and breast surgeon at New Island Hospital will give a free lecture on breast cancer on October 29, 7 p.m. in the staff room on the lower level of the hospital.

Currently, approximately one in almost every eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women after lung cancer and is the leading cause of cancer death among women ages 35 to 54. The American Cancer Society states that in 2005, approximately 211,240 women was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and approximately 40,410 died. Although these numbers may sound frightening, research reveals that the mortality rate could decrease by 30 percent if all women age 50 and older had a mammography.

Dr. Kaufman will discuss the warning signs, treatment modalities and life after breast cancer.

Call community relations at 516- 520-2487 to reserve a seat.
